Sailing For Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Practices on the Water

Sailing is more than just a means of travel; the connection to nature is very profound as you rejuvenate your soul dancing with the wind and waves. If you are careful, the elements even communicate with you implicitly. As we navigate these vast waters, it’s imperative to respect, honour and protect the very environment that sustains our passion. Embracing eco-friendly sailing practices isn’t merely a trend; it’s a responsibility—a commitment to ensuring that the oceans we cherish remain vibrant and unspoiled for the generations to come.

1. Harness the Wind, Embrace the Sun

At the heart of sailing lies wind power—a powerful force that propels us forward without harm spilling any diesel. But why stop there? Fitting solar panels and/or a wind wane into your vessel’s design allows you to capture these natural resources (weather permitting of course), reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing your carbon footprint. Your neighbours will thank you for not starting your engine at 05am to recharge your flat batteries.

2. Choose Maintenance Products with Care

The products we use to maintain our boats can have lasting impacts on marine ecosystems. Opt for biodegradable cleaners and non-toxic antifouling paints to safeguard aquatic life. Ship chandlers are improving their offering to such products, which are worth paying a premium for.

3. Anchor with Awareness

Traditional anchoring can cause significant damage to underwater habitats, especially sensitive coral reefs and posedonia. Whenever possible, utilize mooring buoys—designated spots that prevent anchor-induced harm. This simple practice ensures that our anchors don’t disrupt the delicate balance of marine life below. In other sailing areas such as Greece where you traditionally anchor stern to a dock or a quay, make sure you drop your anchor well clear of any posedonia, that houses sea turtles and other marine wildlife. Alternatively dock in places that offer lazy lines.

4. Commit to Cleanliness

Our commitment to the environment extends beyond our boats. Participate in beach and waterway clean-up initiatives, removing debris that threatens marine life.  When underway, picking up drifting debris makes great MOB practice. It’s easy to bring a garbage bag with you to the beach you intend to chill at and pick up washed up By actively engaging in these efforts, we foster a culture of stewardship and inspire others to do the same.

5. Respect Marine Life

The ocean is home to countless species, each playing a vital role in the ecosystem. Maintain a respectful distance from marine life, observing without disturbing their natural behaviors. This mindfulness ensures that our presence doesn’t intrude upon their world, preserving the natural harmony of the seas. Upon my orca interaction last year off the coast of Cascais in Portugal, I instinctively shut the engine off and let them do their thing. When it was over, the orcas left the boat unscathed. We were lucky.

6. Reduce Fuel Consumption

While sailing inherently reduces fuel use, there are additional steps to further minimize consumption. Regularly maintain your vessel’s engine and hull to ensure optimal efficiency. By keeping your boat in top condition, you not only save on fuel costs but also lessen your environmental impact.

7. Support Sustainable Initiatives

Beyond individual actions, supporting broader sustainable initiatives amplifies our impact. Advocate for policies that protect marine environments and support businesses committed to eco-friendly practices. Research local initiatives before you begin your sailing vacation.

8. Choose Ocean-Friendly Personal Care Products

The products we apply to our skin and hair can significantly impact marine ecosystems. Opting for reef-safe sunscreens, natural soaps, shampoos, and eco-friendly dishwashing liquids ensures that harmful chemicals don’t enter the water, preserving the health of our oceans. White vinegar is perfect as an all round cleaner for most surfaces on boats.

• Reef-Safe Sunscreens: Traditional sunscreens often contain ingrpedients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been linked to coral bleaching and marine life disruption. Choosing sunscreens free from these harmful substances helps protect coral reefs and marine environments.

•Natural Soaps and Shampoos: Many conventional soaps and shampoos contain microplastics and chemicals that can harm marine life. Switching to natural, biodegradable alternatives reduces pollution and supports ocean health.

•Eco-Friendly Dishwashing Liquids: Opt for biodegradable and phosphate-free dishwashing liquids to prevent harmful substances from entering the water system. Brands like Surf Soap offer ocean-safe cleansers that are both effective and environmentally friendly.

By weaving these eco-friendly practices into the canvas of our sailing adventures, we honor our commitment to the environment. Each mindful choice, whether it’s harnessing renewable energy or respecting marine life, contributes to a legacy of sustainability. As sailors, we are both explorers and guardians, entrusted with the task of preserving the oceans that have long been our playground and our sanctuary.
